Caravaca de la Cruz is a town located on the border between Murcia and Granada. A town that was successively visited by Iberians, Romans and Muslims and which is built around its Castle, built in the 15th century by the Knights Templar. But Caravaca is, essentially, the Holy City, the city of the Cross that bears its name. According to legend, in 1232, the Moorish king Abu Zeid converted to Christianity when he saw two angels lower a cross from heaven so that a priest imprisoned in the castle could say mass. This legend gave rise to the construction, from 1617 and within the grounds of the fortress itself, of the main monument of this town in the northwest of Murcia, the Sanctuary of the Vera Cruz. A building that stands out for its luxurious red marble façade from Cehegín, in which the Holy Cross is exalted.
